Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants (HGC), a consulting engineering firm based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer in Training to join our team.

As a geotechnical engineer-in-training you will provide support to experienced senior geotechnical engineers on a wide variety of projects. Under the direction of senior staff, you will aid in the investigation and analyses of geotechnical projects and become part of the day-to-day activities at HGC.

Responsibility

The work would consist of a variety of laboratory, field, and office work which may include:

  • Performing field QA/QC monitoring, inspection, and testing;
  • Performing laboratory and field testing of soils;
  • Installing and monitoring instrumentation;
  • Helping with project coordination, proposal writing, and report writing;
  • Performing site visits to gather information and carry-out construction site review;
  • Marketing and selling engineering services; and
  • Helping develop operating, safety, and laboratory procedures.
  • Required Competencies, Capabilities, and Credentials
  • The successful candidate shall:
  • Have an undergraduate or graduate degree in geotechnical, geological, or civil engineering;
  • Be eligible for registration with Engineers Nova Scotia as an Engineer in Training (EIT);
  • Be ambitious and have a strong desire to expand their knowledge in geotechnical engineering;
  • Be adaptable, flexible, have a willingness to learn and an aptitude for technical work;
  • Have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills;
  • Be highly self-motivated and capable of completing tasks on schedule with minimal supervision;
  • Show strong initiative, innovation, and a commitment to excellence; and
  • Have a valid driver’s licence.

The ideal candidate would also have an aptitude for business development and have some experience in engineering or construction environments.

Geotechnical Technician

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing construction QA/QC monitoring, inspection, and testing
  • Laboratory and field testing of soils
  • Field supervision of geotechnical investigations
  • Installation and monitoring of instrumentation
  • Training and coordinating junior technicians
  • Assisting engineering staff with project coordination, proposal writing, and report writing
  • Performing site visits to gather information, carry out construction site reviews and attend project design and construction meetings
  • Assist engineering staff with marketing and sales of engineering services
  • Help engineering staff develop operating procedures, safety procedures, and laboratory procedures

Qualifications:

  • Direct experience as a geotechnical/materials technician for 5 years
  • Comprehensive understanding of soils and materials testing
  • Valid Nova Scotian driver’s licence
  • Willingness to travel within and outside of Nova Scotia
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently
  • Diploma in civil engineering technology or civil engineering is an asset

The successful candidate will be a highly organized professional with the ability to prioritize multiple work assignments. They will possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Experience with customer relationship management, dealing with contractors, attending project meetings, and coordinating with other organizations and consultants would be considered strong assets.
